What is Taste of Reno?
Taste of Reno was created in 2009 by Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity. The main purpose of the event was to bring different genres of the local scene together and allow each others’ fans as well as the band members themselves, to hear other types of music. After having huge success the first year while hosting it at the Joe Crowley Student Union (at UNR), NAK hosted the 2010, 2011 and 2012 versions of Taste of Reno at The Knitting Factory. All three shows were highly successful and drew more than 2,000 fans combined. The show fulfills its purpose in highlighting the local music scene and keeping the concert local. NAK is very supportive of, not only the local music scene, but helping all locals flourish. Taste of Reno gives many bands an avenue to play in crowds the size of which they’ve never seen before. On average, Taste of Reno has hosted 10-16 bands per year.
What does if benefit?
All proceeds from Taste of Reno go toward NAK’s annual philanthropy event, NAKLand. NAKLand is a free children’s carnival we host every year around Easter. At the carnival, we provide tons of food, games, prizes and entertainment for children in the area. While we target underprivileged children from Title-I schools (schools with low funding), the event is open to the entire community. Since NAKLand’s inception, we’ve served more than 1,000 people at our event and expect it to grow at our next one.
Who is Nu Alpha Kappa?
Nu Alpha Kappa is a primarily Latino fraternity at the University of Nevada, Reno. We have 56 members and one of our main goals is to serve the community at large. We regularly engage in community service with in-need elementary schools, do park clean-ups, volunteer at the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, etc. Above all else, we want to give back to the community that we live in. By giving back, we want to pave the way for future generations to seek a higher education on day.
When is Taste of Reno V?
The concert will be Saturday, Jan. 26 at The Alley. Ticket prices will be $10 presale and $15 at the door. Selection date for bands is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 1.
